What is Backflow?

Backflow is any unwanted flow of used or *non-potable water, or other substances, into the *potable water distribution system.

* Non-potable (Undrinkable water)   *Potable (Drinkable water)

A backflow prevention device is used to protect water supplies from contamination or pollution.

In water supply systems, water is normally maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow from the tap, shower etc. When pressure fails or is reduced as may happen if a water main bursts, pipes freeze or there is unexpectedly high demand on the water system, the pressure in the pipe may be reduced and may allow contaminated water from the ground, from storage or from other sources to be drawn into the system.

Backflow is a reversal of the normal direction of water flow in your water supply plumbing system. It presents a hazard where your water supply is inadvertently interconnected with a source of pollution. Those pollutants could then enter the water supply.

Summary

-  It can happen anywhere potable water is used!

-  Contamination can happen due to cross connections.  Cross connections
are direct or indirect physical connections of potable and non-potable
   water.

-  Water can flow backwards due to a sudden pressure drop.

-  Backpressure can occur when the outlet (downstream) pressure is greater
   than the supply pressure.

-  Worst case scenario backflow can cause death.
